AUSTIN, Texas – May 26, 2020 – In special parking lot ceremonies on Tuesday, May 26, representatives from the Moody Foundation visited Navarro Early College High School and Northeast Early College High School to distribute laptops to 15 Moody Scholars as part of its Moody Scholars program.
Initiated in 1969, the Moody Scholars program was created to provide financial assistance for qualified high school students pursuing higher education in Texas. Since its inception, Moody Scholars has awarded over $17 million to assist more than 5,200 students throughout the state.
“For more than 50 years, the Moody Scholars program has provided opportunities for students to further their learning,” said Angela Blair, education director of the Moody Foundation. “Though we didn’t imagine hosting a parking lot graduation ceremony, we believe this unprecedented time will only strengthen our scholars and spur them towards greater learning and success.”

In past years, the scholars have gone off to attend colleges throughout Texas, including Baylor University, Galveston College, Rice University, Sam Houston State University, Southern Methodist University, Texas A&M University, Texas Tech University, University of Houston, University of Texas at Austin, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston, University of Texas San Antonio and more.
“Our goal for the Moody Scholars program is to bring hope to our scholars’ futures and give them a solid launchpad to continue their academic journeys,” said Erika Tovar, education and scholarship administrative assistant of the Moody Foundation. “We know our Moody Scholars would have loved to celebrate this milestone physically with extended family and friends, so we wanted to make this moment extra special.”
